Hello! I’m Sophie Carrigill and I’m thrilled to tell you that I’m going to be a new Student Blogger. I’d first like to tell you about myself and hopefully, if you find any of the things I do or talk about interesting, then you can follow my journey.
I am studying Sport and Exercise Psychology here at the University of Worcester; I’ve just finished my first year and absolutely loved it. I was always told that the friends you meet at University would be for life, but I never did believepeople, until this year. I can honestly say that I have made some amazing new friends and had some great experiences, so I’m looking forward to my next 2 years to hopefully have an even better time.
It’s safe to say that I have settled in here and like to call Worcester my new home, although my family who live back in Leeds don’t like to hear me say that! I am a proud Yorkshire lass (as they say) and it’s a shame that I don’t get to go home as often as I like.
Along with trying to juggle being a student with the studying and socialising, I am also a member of the GB Women’s Wheelchair Basketball Team, which involves 3 sessions of training 5 days a week. It has been hard work trying to fit everything in, but I wouldn’t be happy if I wasn’t busy, and my family just have to make the trip to Worcester instead!
I first got involved in Wheelchair Basketball after I was in a car accident that paralysed me when I was 16 years old. It has definitely changed my life, but only for the better it seems. I was recently selected to play for Great Britain in the World Championships in Toronto in June and soon after that I was asked if I would Captain the team.
Obviously that is a massive honour and something I am very proud of, I just hope I can prove to be the best person for the job! It’s a massive challenge for me, but I’m the type of person to really get my teeth into something and give it my all.
Although I sound like I do nothing else apart from Basketball, I do still have a life, only just though! One of my other favourite hobbies is cooking, and my friends will all tell you that I make tasty fajitas!! So there will definitely be more to come about my other passions in life.
Anyways, thank you for reading my first blog, watch out for some more posts about juggling life as a student athlete and hopefully telling you about our success in Toronto! Wish me luck!
