How do you make friends at university?

I remember my results day so clearly like it was yesterday. I was so nervous, I didn’t open my results in school and ran back out to open them in the car! I was so relieved to see that I’d got the grades to get into university… I had actually done it!

But then it hit me. I had been so worried about getting the grades to get into university, that I hadn’t even given it a thought as to what it would be like when I got there. After finding out all of my friends had also got their university places, it dawned on me that we would all be moving away.

How was I going to make a new set of friends at university? Would people like me? Would I find it hard to meet new people?

Looking back on my university life, I realised I had nothing to worry about. I have made some of my closest friends at university and I will talk to these people for a long time after finishing university. Everyone is in the same boat and probably thinking the same thing, so here are four easy and simple ways to make friends when you get to university;

  1. Course Mates

You won’t be the only one on your course! There will be other people in your lectures that you can meet and work with and guess what? They are studying the same course as you. You already have one thing in common!

  1. Flat Mates/House Mates

If you decide to stay in student housing or halls, you will end up living with other students. This is a great way to meet new people of different courses; I lived with 5 other people who studied Psychology, English, Geography and Art! I absolutely loved living in halls, it was really great to be living in a student community.

  1. Freshers’ Week

Freshers’ week isn’t all about going out and drinking! There is so much stuff you can get involved in during the welcome week, including the welcome BBQ, fresher’s fair and the sports & societies fair.

As part of my welcome week programme with sports, I went on a day out with my course mates to an activity centre which was a lot of fun. One of my friends met her best friend in a queue at fresher’s fair!

Remember you don’t have to make all of your friends in week one at university! There are so many opportunities to meet people throughout your whole time at university.

  1. Join a Sport or Society

I would highly recommend joining a sport or society at university as it’s one of the best ways to meet new people. I joined the netball society whilst at university and I absolutely loved it! I made some of my closest friends this way and you can read all about my netball experience in another one of my blog posts.

There are so many different sports and societies to join, from rugby to hockey to geography to the Harry Potter society. There really is a sport or society for everyone.

I hope this blog has helped with reducing those worries about making friends at university, just remember that everyone is in the same boat at university. A lot of people will be apprehensive about making friends at university but they may just show it in different ways.
