Gaynor Corrick, FdA Early Childhood student at Hereford and Ludlow College shares her experience on the course.
The thought of starting a degree with all four of my children still at primary school filled me with both trepidation and anticipation. At that point, having working in childcare for eight years, I thought the course would provide information on how to improve my practice. It did, but not by having templates of good practice or models to follow.
The course taught me, through exploring theory and practice, how I could improve not only my own approaches but also support and encourage others around me; especially the children. Through the various modules and imaginative approaches used by lecturers, I realised that, by deepening my own knowledge and understanding, not only what I was doing and how I was working improved but, more importantly, I gained a greater appreciation of why it did.
My experience of the FdA has been incredible both on personal and professional aspects. It inspired me to complete a top up BA (Hons) degree in Integrated Working with Children and Families, qualify as an Early Years Teacher and to continue onto the Masters programme. I am also now supporting the next generation of students as a part-time lecturer at the University of Worcester. Through

Through the support of lecturers and the University of Worcester, I was fortunate enough to travel and speak at two international early childhood conferences, sharing ideas with others working in the childcare sector across the world, realising that we are all, fundamentally working to the same goal of positive early childhood experiences and foundations for all.
The FdA is not easy, it makes you think, consider and challenge yourself, your ideas and your practice however, through doing it, you gain a greater insight not only into the theory of child development, but also of yourself, your voice within the sector and how your approach that can improve the life experiences of children.
