Applying for university is a huge step in your life. It is a step that shapes your future path. Now I look back and smile about being in ‘applying for university situation’ 3 years ago, but back then, I was anxious because I had no idea what and where I wanted to study, and what to become after finishing my degree.
WHAT THE SOCIETY EXPECTS FROM YOU
Focus on yourself only and forget about your parents and the world and just simply try to ignore what everyone is telling you.
If you feel like going to the University, but the society is expecting you to start working and helping with your family business or vice versa, listen to your heart instead.
Focus on what you want to do, because in the end, it’s all about making your dreams come true. Don’t fulfill anyone else’s wishes, let them have theirs and you have yours.
I knew that I had to focus on myself in this process and clearly figure out what I want to achieve. The future seemed vague to me, but I kept my options open.
IF IT DOESN’T GO AS PLANNED
I applied for my dream course at one of the Czech Universities, but did not get in. Back then, it seemed like the end of the world to me and I felt worthless.
Luckily, I was rejected soon enough to still have time to apply for other universities in Czech, but most importantly, to Worcester. I decided to keep my head up and didn’t let the bad news discourage me from fulfilling my dreams.
Being rejected doesn’t mean you are not good enough. Rather than being disappointed, try again next year or look at this as your second chance, an option to re-think and make better choices.
I considered the option of taking a gap year abroad as well, but once I received my acceptance letter from the University of Worcester for BA Marketing, Advertising and PR, I knew that this is exactly what I wanted to do (I could tick my abroad box off too!).
MAKE A LIST
When I asked my parents about studying abroad, I had to make a list of advantages and disadvantages. It helped me to set my goals straight and see things in black and white.
I can now tick off all the boxes off the list that I considered back then- gain more experience and knowledge in the field of my interest, be one step closer to getting dream job (as well as better paid), become independent and develop important skills, explore different place and study/live abroad and many more.
Now, after spending 2,5 year at Worcester, I smile when looking back at the beginnings when I was clueless but adventurous.
University ist another step for you to develop professionally and personally. If you don’t know whether the university is the right option for you, you will soon figure out, but it is still worth the try if you are unsure. You may be surprised to see that it’s the missing piece of the puzzle…
