The amount of opportunities available to you at University can be totally overwhelming. Whether it’s working part time alongside your studies, being part of a society or volunteering in your spare time – it can be difficult to juggle all the elements of a busy student lifestyle. Personally, I manage to juggle my degree, four part-time jobs and society commitments whilst at University. So if I can do it, anyone can! Here are my top 5 tips on balancing your life at University.
Tip 1) Plan your Life
My first tip would be to make sure you plan your time effectively. I would highly recommend investing in a diary. You can see what your week will look like and make sure you don’t forget anything! I would be lost without mine. It also means that you can confidently commit to something and make sure it doesn’t clash with anything else.
Tip 2) Know your Limits
This is something I’ve had to learn the hard way. It’s important to be aware of how you handle stress and how much time you have to give to each of your commitments. If you have an exam that you know you need lots of time to revise for, then don’t say yes to that extra shift at work. Give yourself your best chance to succeed.
Tip 3) Take care of yourself
One rule I absolutely live by is making sure I have one day off a week. I need this day to practice self-care and have a break from my hectic student life. Saturday is usually the day I pick as it means I can cram my weekdays full but relax a bit at the weekend. Making sure you get a decent amount of sleep and are eating properly are also key parts of keeping up with a busy student schedule.
Tip 4) Everything in Moderation
I think achieving balance in your lifestyle can be simple if you do everything in moderation. Particularly when balancing your social life and your degree. I choose two nights a week that I will go out with friends or do something social. I usually pick Wednesday nights for social events and Friday nights for Karaoke. That way I can make sure I get enough work done to allow me to enjoy my social nights, without unfinished work lingering on my mind.
Tip 5) Have Fun
At the end of the day, University should be one of the best experiences of your life. Make sure that everything you take on is rewarding and enjoyable. If you love what you do, you’ll have no problem finding time for it! Having fun in your free time will also keep you relaxed and give you energy when you’re working hard on assignments. A win-win!
There we have it – those are my top five tips for balancing your life at University! I hope you find them useful and are making the most of your wonderful student experience. What are your tips for finding balance at university? Let me know in the comments!
