CHRISTMAS THINGS TO DO IN WORCESTER

Christmas as a student can be a very exciting time. There’s always a lot going on and loads of fun opportunities to get involved with on campus or around the city.  So to help you get started, here are some of my favourite Christmas things to do in Worcester to give you some inspiration!

Making lots of Christmas plans will help time pass quickly and allow you to make the most of your time as a University student. If you’re anything like me, you’ll be looking forward to getting home to your family and celebrating Christmas in your own unique way. However, Christmas is an amazing time for students and there’s lots going on in Worcester, so make the most of it while you’re here! Here are some of my favourites:

Christmas Lights in Worcester

This year’s Worcester Christmas lights are up already. Popping into town to see them is a nice way to kick off the festivities! The Christmas Lights switch on is a lovely event which features choirs, carols and a real family friendly feeling.  The high street and side streets are completely filled with decorations and look lovely in the evenings. They are definitely worth wandering around and great for an Instagram photo. Just make sure you wrap up warm in the cold air!

Victorian Fayre and Christmas Markets

Who doesn’t love a good Christmas market? We’re lucky that Worcester hosts it’s own Victorian themed Christmas market that takes place between 29th November and 2nd December. There is everything on offer, from jewellery and craft stalls to food and drink stands. There is also live entertainment taking place in Bell Square inside Crowngate Shopping Centre. My society (Loco ShowCo.) will be performing on the Saturday too. We’ll be raising money for Starlight Children’s Foundation, so do stop and say hi if you see us!

Mulled Cider

If you decide that you want to venture out of Worcester, why not visit Birmingham Frankfurt Christmas Market? Birmingham is only a short train journey away (an hour from Worcester) and this German themed Christmas market is well worth a look! There’s lots of tasty treats, German drinks and craft stalls to look around.

Late Night Shopping

Every Thursday on the lead up to Christmas, from the 17th November, lots of shops in  Worcester High Street and Crowngate Shopping Centre stay open until 8pm. This is a great way to fit your Christmas shopping around your University schedule. It also makes for a fun flatmate trip if you’re all lost for something to do one evening.

University Carol Concert

Each year, the University put together a carol concert that takes place in the beautiful surroundings of Worcester Cathedral. The ceremony is open to everyone and includes an array of carols, performances and readings.

There are lots of ways to get involved in the concert as students. You’re welcome to join our student and staff choir and SU societies – they’ll be performing some songs and participating in the concert. I will be in both the choir and performing with the Loco ShowCo society.  So I can safely say that it’s a lovely way to celebrate Christmas!

Christmas Tree Festival

Each year, there is a Christmas Tree Festival that takes place inside Worcester Cathedral. The festival is a community event that allows local organisations to come together in celebration. Last year my student services team put together a ‘Peace of Mind’ themed tree that was displayed. There are hundreds of trees on display that all mean something different. This year the festival runs from the 8th December until the 3rd January. I feel like this is a hidden gem and is a must see during your time at Uni.
