I first went home from the university at Christmas. I had been at the university since late September and although I’d met up with family and friends, this was the first time that I’d gone home for a prolonged period of time. Having made so many new friends and becoming familiar with a new place, going back to your old home can be a very surreal experience. To prepare you for what to expect, I share some of the thoughts I had when going back home for the first time.
- It will be nice to see my family and friends again
My first thought, when I got home, was how nice it was seeing my family again and catching up with them. I think they were all surprised at the change they saw in me. I had grown up quite a bit in the short time I’d been away. My mum was surprised at the amount of washing up I was doing and that I was helping out around the house much more (a result of living away from home!) As well as my improvement in household chores, I felt much more confident in myself and had developed a lot more independence since going away.
- Will my old friends remember me?
One of the best things about being back home was catching up with old friends. It was great meeting up with my school friends who I hadn’t seen for months and hearing about what they had been up to. Many of my friends were also at university and it was great hearing about everybody’s different experiences. We all organised to meet up with each other in the New Year which gave us an opportunity to visit the different universities and places.
- Going home is a well-deserved break from coursework
It was also nice to have a break from the coursework I was doing for the university. Although I still had a few assignments to complete, having some time off was really good and I felt refreshed after a few days of relaxing. It was also nice being able to work at home and I was still able to enjoy all the festivities that come at Christmas.
- I miss university
I really enjoyed spending time with family and friends over the Christmas period. It felt like I had been away from home for ages but at the same time, I was already looking forward to getting back to Worcester and seeing my new friends again.
Hopefully, this will help if you ever wondered what it’s like to go home from the university for the first time.
