What to Take to University: Your Essential Guide

If you’re preparing to move into university accommodation this September, you’re likely spending your summer break frantically trying to figure out what you do and do not need to take with you. Don’t worry – we’ve got you covered!

Here is our guide to everything you’ll need to bring to university, as well as the items you should leave behind.

Kitchen

Many students choose to share kitchenware with their new flatmates to save on money and storage space, and this is something that can be discussed with them once you’ve settled in. Trust us – you will not need five woks.

There are some basic items you may want to bring with you for personal use. These are likely to include plates, bowls, cutlery, drinking glasses and a mug. We’d recommend bringing only two of each to save on storage space.

Bathroom

Besides your usual toiletries, the only real essential here is supplying your own toilet paper. Again, this is a responsibility that can eventually be shared with your flatmates.

For those living in ensuite accommodation, you may want to bring along a bath mat and toilet brush. We’d also suggest investing in some cleaning products – while communal spaces will be regularly cleaned, your room is your responsibility!

Bedroom

Halls of Residence are fully furnished with all the essentials, as well as helpful extras like a noticeboard, desk lamp and bin. It’ll be up to you to pack the items that will make your new bedroom feel more like home:

Bedding – your bed will be equipped with a mattress and mattress topper, but you’ll have to supply your own bedding and pillows. It’s a good idea to pack a couple of different bedding options to avoid being caught out on laundry day. Bed sizes differ depending on your accommodation tier, so make sure you check which size bedding you need in advance.

Laundry basket – we recommend something with handles – it’ll make your trip to the on-campus laundrette much easier!

Clothes hangers – your clothes are an obvious essential when moving out but be sure to also bring along some coat hangers to keep everything organised, as these will not be supplied.

Electronics – remember to pack your laptop, chargers, speakers, and any other additional electronics you might need. Some students also choose to bring a TV, but make sure you arrange for a TV licence if you’re planning on doing this.

Decorations – a surefire way to give your new room some personality is by sprucing it up with a rug and some cushions, or by bringing along some prints or photos of loved ones. If you’re thinking of hanging your decor, however, invest in some Command Strips – these will help you avoid any permanent wall damage.

Other Essentials

There are some miscellaneous items you’ll be glad you packed in your suitcase:

Important documents – these might include your passport, driver’s license, National Insurance number, and any documentation relating to your university place, Student Finance, or accommodation contract. We recommend picking up a folder to keep these safe and organised.

Medication – if you take medication, make sure you bring enough to last you until you’re able to register with a local GP surgery.

Bank cards – University of Worcester is a cashless campus, so be sure to have your card to hand when you’re making purchases!

Mobile phone – if you’re an International student, we advise you to get a UK sim card as soon as possible.

Extension leads and adaptors – however, bear in mind that cube extension plugs are not allowed in Halls. All electronic devices will also be PAT-tested within your first two weeks of living in university accommodation.

What Not to Bring

Finally, here are all items you should avoid bringing along:

Kettles and toasters – Accommodation Services will provide each flat with the necessary appliances, so save your money!

Fire hazards – these include deep fat fryers, portable heaters, candles, tea lights, incense sticks, and wax warmers. It’s also worth bearing in mind that all Halls are smoke-free areas, and that this includes e-cigarettes.

Mains-powered fairy lights – if you’re looking for cosy vibes, go for battery-operated lights instead.

Remember, as long as you have the essentials, anything else can be bought on campus or in the city centre – so no need to worry if you forget something at home. Safe travels!
